4 Tempos - large format murals
In large formats, colour behaves to full. It relates to every space with an
independant visual language.
Therefore murals function like windows which enlarge and specify space, contributing its own language, while intervening architectural space, modifying and integrating it.
Landscapes are created with colour abstraction, they evoke the earth's magma, it's space, the oceans ...
EXEMPLA XXII - Munich 1990
Under the motto "Masters in Architecture", EXEMPLA XXI gathered artists who enhanced architecture with their works. I was invited to represent Spain as a mural ceramist and ongoing hispanic-arab ceramic researcher. I made the 4 murals "Cuatro Tiempos" for this exhibition
SEPTIEMBRE represents the period when light diminishes, the sun retreats and winter gets closer. It is composed of a large upper panel in bismuth blue and a lower one in silver.
OCTUBRE Autumn in Morcuera. Copper and cadmium reds cover the whole surface, like Autumn's mantle.
NOVIEMBRE 09/09/1989. The Berlin wall falls. An imaginary section of the wall reads FREIHEIT in traces of graffiti.
DICIEMBRE Snow melting on earth. Selene white, cadmium and silver.
These pieces evidence the synthesis of my research with ceramics and carbonation. I was motivated by the huge challenge any ceramist faces when undertaking large format works, carried out after smaller investigative pieces. Metal oxides attain plenitude and the depth of colour of bismuth blues, silver, copper, cadmium and selenium can be admired with large format works.
Although ceramic is an ancient traditional material, far from disappearing and being replaced by new ones, it remains at the avant-guard of powerful, creative trends and is used as an architectural element both for exteriors and interiors.
